Asian Development Bank Economic and Research Department: "Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Regional Integration, Growth, and Economic Convergence: Scenario Analysis for Asia," by David Roland-Holst (WP 91, February 2007, .pdf format, 50p.).

Abstract:

As Asia’s economic growth process matures, regional integration offers important opportunities to sustain and extend the achievements of the more dynamic economies. Benefits from this process will include geographic diversification, often toward superior growth rates, as well as structural differentiation and morerapid evolution from established north-south patterns of trade and specialization.Propagation of growth linkages across this diverse region will also facilitate more inclusive growth and economic convergence. Infrastructure commitments can be an essential guarantor of the entire process, and this paper examines their potential to contribute to more sustained and broadly based Asian growth.

Korea Development Institute School [Seoul]: "Fiscal Balance Forecast of Cambodia 2007-2011," by Ilho Yoo (WP 06-07, December 2006, .pdf format, 28p.).

Abstract:

In this paper, we attempt to forecast the fiscal balance of Cambodia in years 2007-2011, based on the revenue and expenditure data since the political stabilization which started in 1993. Major tool for the analysis is OLS, and the huge deficit is forecasted. To cover the deficit, Cambodian government should issue government bond, which is not an easy task considering the development stage of her bond markets. A few policy recommendations on its development will be given.

UK Department for Work and Pensions: "2.5 million more jobs," by Lucie Gadenne, Richard Given, Marcia Stephens and Caitlin Wilkinson (WP No. 36, 2006, .pdf format, 40p.).

Summary:

The UK continues to have one of the strongest labour markets in the world -- with more people in work than ever before, an employment rate of 74.6 per cent and the best combination of employment, unemployment and inactivity of the major world economies. Since 1997, the number of people in work has increased by more than 2.5 million, to 28.94 million. This paper sets out in detail the story behind these changes. 2.5 million Jobs Since 1997 the employment rate has grown by 1.7 percentage points to 74.6 per cent -- one of the highest figures on record. The growth in employment has been highest in those areas that were previously further behind. The employment rate in the UK is now above the European Union (EU) average in every region, and in 388 of the 406 local authorities. The employment level has increased by 9.3 per cent, and there has been growth in every region and nation of the UK since 1997. Nationally, female employment has grown faster than male (10.7 per cent compared with 8.1 per cent). Meanwhile, International Labour Organisation (ILO) unemployment has fallen by 350,000 since 1997, with claimant unemployment (Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)) down by 670,000. Long-term unemployment has fallen further still, to less than half the 1997 level. The ILO unemployment rate is also down, by 1.7 percentage points since 1997. And the fall has been most noticeable for men -- halving between 1993 and today. Inactivity -- the proportion of people who are not working, looking for work, or available for work -- is also down. The working age inactivity rate is at its lowest since 1992, and inactivity for women is the lowest on record.
