Census Data Center Zip Code Resources Page Update: MCDC has recently updated its ZIP Code Resources Page, a kind of FAQ (but without the Q and A format) for researchers interested in U.S. postal geography codes. It provides some general background information about ZIP codes. It describes and links to various reference materials, data files, web sites and other resources of interest to users wanting to work with ZIPs. This is Version 2.1, a revision that entails a description of the new zcta_master dataset. ...This version focuses on the Census Bureau's new (for 2000) ZIP Census Tabulation Area (ZCTA) codes, close cousins of ZIP codes. As in the earlier version, we place special emphasis on tools for linking ZIP (/ZCTA) codes to other geographies (such as counties, cities, metro areas) and to demographic information from the latest decennial census."

WORKING PAPERS:

College of William and Mary Department of Economics: "Green Cards and the Location Choices of Immigrants in the United States, 1971-2000," by David A. Jaeger (Working Paper No. 29, May 2006, .pdf format, 54p.).

Abstract:

This paper documents where immigrants who enter the U.S. with different types of visas ("green cards") choose to live initially and what determines those location choices. Using population data on immigrants from the Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1971 to 2000, matched to data on state characteristics from the Integrated Public Use Micro-samples of the U.S. Census, I estimate conditional logit models with the 48 contiguous U.S. states as the choice set. Like previous researchers, I estimate that immigrants have a higher probability of moving to states where individuals from their region of birth represent a larger share of the state population, with relatives of legal permanent residents responding most to this factor. I also find that, in general, immigrants in all admission categories respond to labor market conditions when choosing where to live, but that these effects were the largest for male employment-based immigrants and, surprisingly, refugees.
