About the Catalog
The Data and Information Services Center (DISC) Catalog of Holdings allows you to search for descriptions of the datasets currently available for use at the library. These catalog descriptions are not duplicated in the UW-Madison Library Catalog.
DISC is the primary campus-wide clearinghouse for storage and access to machine-readable data files in the Social Sciences. Our collection spans a wide range of topics including historical and contemporary population characteristics, community and urban studies, intra- and international conflict, economic behavior and attitudes, education, mass political behavior and attitudes, and social institutions and behaviors.
Some of the datasets available at DISC are ASCII files, not embedded in a statistical package such as SPSS or SAS. In these cases, users must choose which statistical package they wish to use with the data and then write the program necessary to access them. Others of our datasets come on CD-ROM discs and these may have their own easy-to-use software packages for data extraction. If a dataset is on CD-ROM it will be noted as such in the title field. In general, DISC datasets are not downloadable directly from the catalog; in some cases, online codebooks may be viewed.
If you do not find what you are looking for in the DISC Catalog of Holdings, you may want to extend your search to the holdings of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), a major clearinghouse for social science data and the The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. DISC holds the UW-Madison membership to ICPSR and the Roper Center. ICPSR datasets and public opinion surveys from the Roper Center are available for downloading from any UW-Madison networked computer.
The library staff is happy to answer any questions or help you with any problems concerning identifying and accessing data for analysis.
