Codebook for "survey1.por" Dataset

ipadd:* Internet protocol address of person requesting file
uniqid:* unique identification number for computer/browser combination (based on "cookie")
sessid:* session identification number for computer/browser visit; a new session identification number was assigned to computer/browser combination when at least 60 minutes had passed since the most recent file request from that computer/browser combination
counter:* the number of sessions (based on sessid) beginning March 6, 1997
response: indication of status of case (i.e., response and non-response); "0" for those who refused the request to participate on the initial choice page; "1" for those who accepted on the choice page but refused when confronted with the consent form; "2" for those who expressed a willingness to fill out the survey on their next visit but either never returned to the site during the study period or gave the same response on separate visits; "3" accepted request to participate on the choice page and "signed" the consent form, indicating a valid respondent (while all others represent the 37% non-respondents for this study)
scidisc: interest in scientific discoveries (1-10 scale with one representing "not at all interested" and 10 representing "extremely interested")
meddisc: interest in medical discoveries (1-10 scale with one representing "not at all interested" and 10 representing "extremely interested")
environ: interest in environmental issues (1-10 scale with one representing "not at all interested" and 10 representing "extremely interested")
newtech: interest in new technologies (1-10 scale with one representing "not at all interested" and 10 representing "extremely interested")
birth: year of birth in two-digit format (assuming birth during the 20th century)
gender: "70" for males and "71" for females
webfreq: number of times used the World Wide Web during the past month
ed: level of formal education; "81" for less than 8th grade; "82" for less than a high school diploma; "83" some college but no degree; "84" for associate's degree; "85" for bachelor's degree; "86" for some graduate school but no graduate degree; "87" for graduate degree; NOTE DUE TO A CLERICAL ERROR THERE WAS NO CATEGORY FOR THOSE WITH A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA BUT NO COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

*Note that these first four variables were not self reported but instead recorded automatically by the World Wide Web server that hosted the survey.
